Two things decide whether a planter belongs on a roof: what it weighs when it's full and saturated, and where the water goes when it drains. Everything else, size, material, finish, plant selection, follows from those two answers. Get them from your structural engineer or building manager before you order anything.
How much does a rooftop planter actually weigh?
Whatever the product listing says, because that's the empty weight, and it's the least useful number in the decision.
Four things make up the loaded weight:
The planter itself. Fixed, known, and the smallest of the four in any planter big enough to hold a shrub or a tree.
The growing medium. Scales directly with interior volume, so a planter that looks only slightly larger in a rendering can hold considerably more soil.
The water that medium holds when it's saturated. The part almost everyone leaves out. A planter that's been through three days of rain weighs meaningfully more than the same planter in a dry August week, and your roof has to carry the wet version.
The plant at maturity. This one goes up every year while the other three stay flat. A tree that arrives in a fifteen-gallon root ball is not the tree your roof carries in year eight.
Ask for the empty weight and the interior dimensions of any planter you're considering, then hand both to whoever is responsible for the roof. They'll combine the volume with the weight of your specified growing medium at saturation and tell you whether the placement works. That's the calculation, and it belongs with the person who knows the structure.
Dead load and live load, in plain terms
If you bring this to a structural engineer, these are the two words they'll use.
Dead load is permanent and unchanging: the planter, the growing medium, the plant.
Live load varies: rainwater in the medium, snow on top of it, people walking around it, wind pushing against a tall plant.
A planter is mostly dead load with a live load component that swings hard with weather. That's why "how much does it weigh" gets answered with a range rather than a number.
There's a second distinction that matters more than most people expect. A planter is a point load, concentrated on a small footprint, not a load spread evenly across the deck. The same total weight behaves differently depending on how much surface it sits on and what's underneath that surface. Directly over a beam or column line is a different structural condition from the middle of an unsupported span.
Practical version: keep weight near the perimeter and over structural lines, and keep it off the center of a long span unless someone has run the numbers.
Corten steel vs. aluminum on a rooftop
The instinct is to reach for aluminum because it's lighter, and that instinct is right. It matters less than people expect, because the growing medium and the water it holds account for most of the loaded weight in any planter large enough for a rooftop planting. Sizing the planter correctly changes the total more than switching materials does.

Where the weight difference actually shows up is getting the planters onto the roof. That usually means a freight elevator with a posted capacity, a stairwell, or a crane pick with a rated limit. Aluminum can be the difference between carrying units up by hand and booking equipment for a morning, which is a scheduling and budget question rather than a structural one.
Corten earns its place on exposed rooftops for a different reason. The patina is the finish rather than a layer applied over the steel, so there's nothing on the surface to maintain as it ages in full sun and constant wind. Non-penetrating placement, and what actually protects the membrane
Non-penetrating means nothing bolts, screws, or anchors through the roof. The planter stays put under its own weight. On most commercial roofs, and on any roof still under warranty, this is the only method worth considering.
Three conditions have to be true.
Nothing punctures the membrane. No anchors, no fasteners, no drilling. If a tall planting needs restraint against wind, that gets solved with ballast or a rooftop-rated restraint system.
The planter sits above the membrane rather than flat on it. Clearance underneath, from pavers, sleepers, pedestals, or feet, keeps the membrane from staying permanently wet and lets water pass beneath the planter on its way to the drain.
Water has somewhere to go. Drainage holes only do their job if the water leaving the planter can reach a roof drain. Water that exits the base and pools underneath has just moved the problem somewhere you can't see it.
That last one is where rooftop installs actually fail. Membranes degrade where they stay wet and where debris collects, and a planter sitting flat on a membrane hides both for years. Nobody finds it until someone moves the planter.

Before any of this gets finalized, find out who holds the roof warranty and what it says about placed loads, clearance, and anything resting on the membrane. That answer often decides the installation method for you.
Why rooftop containers dry out faster than the same planter at grade
A rooftop is windier, hotter, and more exposed than the same square footage of ground twenty feet below. Wind pulls moisture off foliage and off the soil surface. Membrane and parapet surfaces reflect heat back into the root zone. The same plant in the same planter needs more water on a roof than it does in a yard.
Soil volume is the buffer. A larger planter holds more water, holds temperature more steadily, and gives roots room to sit away from the walls. Undersized containers on a roof deck become a watering problem that never resolves, and no material choice fixes it.
That's the real tension in rooftop planter design: the soil volume that keeps plants alive is the same soil volume the structure has to carry. Sizing a rooftop planter means finding the largest volume the roof can take, not the smallest one the plant will tolerate.
Wind does one more thing worth planning for. A six-foot tree in a planter is a sail. The planter needs enough weight and a low enough center of gravity to stay put in a gust, which usually argues for a wider footprint rather than a taller one.
Residential roof deck vs. commercial rooftop: what changes?
On a residential roof deck, the structure is generally already rated for people and furniture, so one planter beside a seating area rarely changes the picture. The question shifts when you start grouping. Twelve planters lining a parapet is a different conversation, and that one goes to a structural engineer.
Two things to check first, both of which take a phone call:
- In a condo, co-op, or managed building, house rules usually govern rooftop loads and roof access, and they tend to be stricter than the structure requires.
- If the roof is under warranty, find out what it permits before anything is ordered.
On a commercial rooftop, the planters enter someone's load calculation alongside pavers, furniture, and mechanical equipment. The engineer of record works from dimensions and weights, not product photos.
